How do I perform a gene search?
The backbone of BioCarta, Gene Search allows you to simultaneously search BioCarta's database and multiple external online databases for sequence data, publications and reviews, disease correlation and interrelationships with other genes and Pathways. You can also save the search settings for repeated use to your My BioCarta account.
How do I locate information related to specific genes?
If you know the exact gene symbol for which you would like to conduct a search, select the Gene Symbol button for the quickest route to a successful search result. If you do not know the exact gene symbol, select the Gene Name button to perform a broader search. In both cases, you'll need to enter the appropriate keyword in the text field provided.
To narrow your search results, you may select a single Bio Category or Organism. Likewise, you may select a specific organism or choose All. Once these text fields are complete, simply click Search to initiate the query.
What results does the gene search results page provide?
Review:
This column links you to general reviews
and information about the specific
gene, including OMIM (TM), the Online Mendelian Inheritance
in Man (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/omim).
DNA/RNA:
This column links you to
genomic and other gene-related information,
including LocusLink (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/LocusLink),
KEGG, Kyoto
Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (http://www.genome.ad.jp),
and Unigene
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Unigene).
Protein:
This column links you to
protein sequence information, including SwissProt
(http://www.expasy.ch/sprot).
Others:
This column links you to a
variety of other informative databases and
web sites, including GeneCard (http://bioinfo.weizmann.ac.il/cards)
andNCBI Genes and Disease (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?call=bv.View..ShowSection&rid=gnd.preface.91)
which present information
on gene involvement in disease.
Publications:
This column links you to
bibliographic information, including PubMed
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez).
BioCarta Results: This column directs you to Pathways, Reagents, and e-Posters that relate to that specific gene. Clicking on one of them directly links you to more information within BioCarta.
If your search result returns no match, try broadening your search by selecting All Organisms and All Bio Categories on the Gene Search page. (A new search page will come up automatically so you can re-search the gene by different parameters.)
If you still can't find the Gene for which you are searching, please contact BioCarta so we can confirm it is not in our gene library and then add it to our database.
How do I save a link to a gene?
Before this function will work, you must first become a BioCarta member. It's a fast, easy process. Simply go to My BioCarta and sign in. After you register, you only have to click on Save Link on a specified Gene Search screen. Your My BioCarta account will automatically store your search parameters, allowing you to easily repeat the search and stay updated on the latest scientific developments for that specific gene.
How do I use "Advanced Search"?
The Advanced Search feature lets you look for information on another gene at any time. Clicking New Search clears the text fields and prepares the system for a new investigation.
